How do I back-up and restore my data?

I’ve gotten a lot of questions lately about how to back-up and restore recipes.  First and foremost, if you do not run the back-up procedure and save the back-up files to your computer, if you have an issue with your iPad, and you have to run a restore you will lose all of your recipes.  So, it is very important to back-up your files regularly.

For those who upgraded to the iPad 2 – congrats!  You can use the same back-up and restore procedures outlined below to save the files from your old iPad and restore them to your new iPad 2.

  • How can I back-up my data?
  1. Touch the settings icon in the upper left corner
  2. Touch the Backup/Restore button
  3. Touch the Run Backup Mode button
  4. Connect your device to your computer, and allow iTunes to sync and back-up your data
  5. With the device still connected, make sure the name of your device is selected in the left column
  6. Across the top of the right side of the iTunes window, summary is usually selected, with a summary of your iPad. Select the “Apps” button instead.
  7. Scroll to the bottom, and you will see the File Sharing Section
  8. Click on Recipe Book, and you will see several files under RecipeBook Documents
  9. Highlight the folder called BACKUPFOLDER, it should have today’s date on it, if you ran backup mode today
  10. In the bottom right, click the Save To button
  11. Navigate to the location on your computer that you would like to save your back-up and click Choose
  12. The folder will save to the selected drive on your computer
  13. If you open the folder, you will notice image files as well as a database file called RecipeBook.sqlite – this is the backed up database of your recipes, and you will not be able to open the file and check it, or read it on your computer since it is a database file. This is the file that will restore your recipes if anything happens to your device

How do I restore my files if something has happened to my device?

  1. Touch the settings icon in the upper left corner
  2. Touch the Backup/Restore button
  3. Touch the Run Restore Mode button
  4. Close the app
  5. Connect your device to the computer
  6. Find the File Sharing section in iTunes that you used to create the back-up
  7. Highlight Recipe Book
  8. Click the Add button
  9. Select all the files within the BACKUPFOLDER on your hard drive, if it asks you to overwrite the files in there, click yes
  10. Start the My Recipe Book app
  11. The app will take a few minutes to run the import, be patient and don’t close out of the app or the restore won’t complete
  12. The app will open normally after that, and the recipes from your back-up will be there

  1. Downloaded your app. ? I have a multitude of recipes either in a scanned PDF file or saved as a scanned photo on my iPad. How do I import these to myreciepwbook app? All reciepe apps require you to input the recipe into the app, however, the reason I bought the app was it said something about saving those recipes you tear out of a magazine. Can Iimport them from me iPad apps to your app? Thanks

  2. Hi

App. Request. Will You please add the possibility to sync with dropbox account. We have several ipad’s and it would be very nice that they all had the same recipes without gong through that nightmare of backup/recovery solution that is the only solution right now.
Besides that, thanks for the best recipe app 🙂

    Regards

  3. It would be great to be able to create my recipes using my computer and then import them into the ipad. Is there any thought of creating such a feature on your site?

  4. I have a problem that the app has disappeared from IPAD. Contacted Apple and they “restored” the app. After restore, I touched the My Recipe Book icon and the app background briefly flashed on Ipad and then disappeared, leaving the Ipad panel showing all apps icons.

Love app and would love to have it back along with all the recipes we have added to app. Any help appreciated. Ken Everette
